Consider Energy Efficient Skylights, Sun Tunnels®, and Solar Water Heaters when Planning Upcoming Renovations

Toronto, ON, April 4, 2011 – With Earth Day just around the corner many Canadians will be thinking about living a greener, more energy efficient lifestyle. And what better way to show your appreciation to mother earth than to make lasting home improvements that can reduce your energy consumption and your family’s carbon footprint.

“Investing in a greener home can transform a conventional room into a beautiful living space,” said Richard Brunet, National Sales Manager VELUX Canada, “we have a wide variety of window solutions and products that can improve daylight and air circulation, increase energy efficiency, while also creating a bright and healthy living environment.”

Specialized manufactures like VELUX offer a wide range of leak proof skylights, roof windows, Sun Tunnels and solar heating systems that can result in significant savings on heating, lighting, and cooling bills with the smart use of sunlight and fresh air.

Consider some of these green solutions from VELUX:

Energy savings
Skylights can reduce your dependence on electric lighting and brighten up a living space in a way that no ordinary light bulb ever could. VELUX’s Energy Star® qualified Skylights provide 100% more natural light compared to vertical windows and will optimize your home’s energy use.

Facts

  • To minimize heat gain VELUX incorporates argon gas between the insulated panes of all glass products and uses low emissivity coatings (Low-E) to create more energy efficient skylights
  • LoE3 protective coating provides a 65% reduction in heat loss and can save nearly $200 annually in energy bills in comparison to a home without LoE3 (standard in all of VELUX products)
Healthy Environments and Ventilation
Certain skylights and roof windows help reduce energy costs and improve indoor air quality by improving ventilation, releasing hot air and drawing in fresh air for circulation. VELUX’s Venting Skylights produce a “passive air conditioner” which results in lower energy costs due to the reduced demand for electric air conditioning and fans.

Facts

  • A venting skylight is positioned at the top of the room, where you will find the warmest air in the home. Opening the skylight allows hot air to escape and cooler, fresher air to come in through the room’s vertical windows and doors greatly improving a home's ability to naturally cool itself
  • Venting skylights also draw out 'off gases' (i.e. from new furniture, paints, new carpets), cleaning product or chemical smells, cooking smells and pet odours
Naturally Heating your Water
Use the power of solar energy to heat your water. Installing a solar water heater saves CO2 from the atmosphere and can lower your water bills by up to 60%.

Facts

  • Heating your water with solar energy saves over 3000 kWh’s of energy, resulting in an annual cost savings of anywhere from $200-$600 (savings dependent on the amount of water used and current method of heating)
  • If you currently heat your water by gas you would need to plant roughly 100 trees to offset the yearly amount of CO2 your heating system releases into the environment, if you use electricity you would need to plant more than 100 tress in Ontario and up to 400 trees in some other provinces
These simple solutions amount to a significant step towards a greener future and a healthier home.
